The Dominican Republic will host the 6th. Ministerial Meeting of the Energy and Climate Alliance of the Americas

The Energy and Climate Alliance of the Americas (ECPA) is set to hold its 6th Ministerial Meeting in the Dominican Republic. The event will bring together the highest energy authorities of the member states. It will focus on the topic "Renewable energies of the Americas: integration and innovation," directly linked to the thematic and transversal axes of ECPA. Attendees will include government leaders, representatives of the private sector, experts in energy and sustainable development, and other key stakeholders from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The two-day event, organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, is scheduled for March 14 and 15 in Punta Cana, La Altagracia province. The main goals of the meeting are to encourage regional commitment to accelerate the transition towards clean energy, promote dialogue between the public and private sectors to identify opportunities and challenges in the energy transition and sustainable development, and strengthen regional cooperation mechanisms to support energy transition efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

According to Antonio Almonte, Minister of Energy and Mines, this ministerial conclave is an opportunity to exchange experiences, good practices, and lessons learned about the transformation of the energy sector in the region, which will contribute to accelerating the energy transition in the area.

“This event is a unique opportunity to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the countries of our region and thus achieve a fair and inclusive energy transition to achieve zero net emissions by 2050,” he said.

The meeting will also address promoting access to clean, safe, and affordable energy, prioritizing the sustainable energy development of rural areas, vulnerable areas, and historically neglected communities. The Dominican Republic has been part of the Steering Committee that has guided the actions of the ECPA since 2015, along with other countries that lead strategic pillars or thematic areas related to energy.

What is ECPA?

The Energy and Climate Alliance of the Americas (ECPA) initiative, which originated at the 2009 V Summit of the Americas, is promoted by the Department of Sustainable Development of the Organization of American States (OAS).

The ECPA offers support to member countries in the region in their transition processes towards clean, resilient and inclusive energy systems, functioning as a platform for multilateral coordination, public-private cooperation, capacity building and dissemination.

Currently, the ECPA steering committee comprises ten countries and is chaired by the Dominican Republic, which will host the 2024 ministerial meeting.
